Claude vs ChatGPT (with browsing) vs ChatGPT vs Silatus: A Comparison

published on 22 May 2023

Given recent changes that make it harder to get good results from GPT-4, Claude by Anthropic might be taking the lead in the foundation LLM game. LLMSYS Org - a developer of open, scalable, and accessible AI models - rated GPT-4 just slightly ahead of Claude v1 on May 8th, 2023.

Other recent reports from various sources indicate that ChatGPT, both with and without browsing, is starting to show signs of weakness. Sometimes it displays the wrong result. Other times it simply regurgitates what it was asked. Often, it requires multiple back and forth chat messages to get the perfect response.

There are two major problems with having to chat multiple times to get a good response:

  1. Speed: One of the benefits of ChatGPT over, say, Google is its supposed speed to appropriate response. Going back and forth with the chatbot takes time.
  2. Rate Limits: GPT-4, as of this writing, has a cap of 25 messages every 3 hours. If it takes you about 10 messages to get the right response, that means you can only have 2 to 3 conversations with the chatbot every 3 hours.

LLMSYS doesn't give many great alternatives. Their #2 ranked LLM is Claude by Anthropic, followed by another OpenAI GPT-based model. Claude is only widely available through Slack. Our LLM, Silatus AI - a specialized AI system that conducts research and encapsulated that research into a professional report - is widely available and has no rate limits when you setup an account.

Let's compare these models with a simple, yet revealing prompt. The prompt is: What are the top rock bands?

All 4 models were given the same exact prompt with punctuation on the same date (May 22nd, 2023). These were the results:

Determining the "top" rock bands is subjective, as it could be based on many factors like record sales, influence, longevity, critical acclaim, popularity, and so on. However, as of my last training data in September 2021, some of the most recognized rock bands globally include:

1. The Beatles: The British band is often considered the greatest and most influential rock band of all time.

2. The Rolling Stones: Another British band, known for their charismatic performances and a string of successful albums over decades.

3. Led Zeppelin: An English band known for their unique blend of hard rock and blues, which influenced many future rock and metal bands.

4. Pink Floyd: A progressive rock band noted for their concept albums and use of philosophical lyrics.

5. Queen: Famous for their anthems and frontman Freddie Mercury's vocal abilities.

6. The Who: Known for pioneering the "rock opera" with albums like Tommy and Quadrophenia.

7. U2: This Irish band is well-known for their anthemic sound and Bono's politically charged lyrics.

8. AC/DC: Australian hard rock band, widely recognized for their energetic performances.

9. Guns N' Roses: An American hard rock band who rose to fame in the late 80s and early 90s.

10. Metallica: One of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time.

11. Radiohead: Known for their experimentation and evolution across different styles of rock.

12. Nirvana: Pioneers of the grunge movement in the 90s, with a lasting influence on rock music.

These are just a few examples, and there are many more influential rock bands from different sub-genres and periods. The music landscape might have changed after 2021, and new bands may have emerged. Please verify with up-to-date sources.

Top Rock Bands: A Comprehensive Analysis

Rock and roll has been a significant cultural force since the 1950s, traditionally popular among younger adults and teenagers. Although R&B and hip-hop surpassed rock as the dominant genre in the U.S. in 2017, rock and roll remains alive and popular.

Conclusion

As you can see, all of these models generate distinct results that serve varying purposes. In this case, ChatGPT with browsing was very succinct and to the point. It appears to have only searched a single source to get its results. On the other hand, Silatus AI searched 8 sources and generated a detailed report based on a very short prompt. It also generated and presented the research that it used for its report (not shown in this article).

ChatGPT without browsing and Claude by Anthropic both gave similar results. ChatGPT without browsing gave its classic "I don't have access to anything beyond 2021" warning with short descriptions of each band it mentions. Claude skips the warnings and presents exactly what its told, with more detail than ChatGPT.

All of these models and technologies are clearly state-of-the-art and capable of doing much more than was every thought possible. Here's our ranking of the best as of now:

  2. Claude by Anthropic
